Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi, covers some 4,871 km2, as the eastern section of the Okavango Delta. Moremi is mostly described as one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Africa. It combines mopane woodland and acacia forests, floodplains and lagoons. It is the great diversity of plant and animal life that makes Moremi so well known.

The area was officially designated as a game reserve in April 1965 and was initially run by the Fauna Conservation Society of Ngamiland.  In August 1979 the reserve was taken over by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. A further extension was added as recently as 1992 and now the reserve contains within its boundaries approximately twenty percent of the Okavango Delta

Maun Educational Park

The 2.5 km2 Maun Environmental Educational Centre, on the eastern bank of the Thamalakane River, aims to provide schoolchildren with an appreciation of wildlife and the bush.

Tsodilo Hills

The enigmatic and spiritual quality of the hills was noted by the famous author Sir Laurens van der Post.  It was here that Sir Laurens's team was attacked by swarms of bees three mornings running. When he learned from his guide that two of his party had disturbed the Tsodilo spirits by ignoring long-established protocol and killing a warthog and a steenbok while approaching the sacred hills, van der Post buried a note of apology beneath the panel of paintings that now bears his name and it was apparently accepted.

Nhabe Museum

In northwest Botswana, 2 hours and 20 minutes drive from the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve lies a best kept secret - Nhabe Museum, the only museum in Botswana's vast, culturally diverse north-west. The museum outlines the natural history and culture of the Okavango region. It is housed in a historic building built by the British military in 1939 and used during WWII as a surveillance post against the German presence in Namibia.
